Community healthcare workers are a valuable part of BMC at GRMDC
Those of us who work at GRMDC know how unique our services are, and we want to keep our jobs for years to come. But as non-union workers, our jobs are not as secure as we would like. Management has the power to decide our salaries and benefits. When we join other BMC union members and form our union with 1199SEIU, we can use our collective voice to make improvements so GRMDC can continue to be successful in delivering quality care.
GRMDC provides vital medical and behavioral health care, but we need professional wages, job protections, secure benefits, and respect in the workplace to be able to recruit and retain dedicated and qualified staff. We believe joining our BMC colleagues in 1199SEIU is our best opportunity to improve our working conditions and improve the quality of care we provide.

1199 BMC members say, “Join our movement, unity is strength!”
Our Boston Medical Center peers who recently won their 1199 contract achieved historic wage increases of 15%-39% over four years, paid training and educational opportunities, a Workplace Safety Committee where providers are empowered to protect themselves and patients, and more.
-
Shannan Bush, RN, Workplace Safety Committee Co-chair
“I’m proud that our contract contains comprehensive safety language that no other hospital has. The Workplace Safety Committee has come a long way with improving conditions in the hospital, such as incorporating metal detectors and other weapons screening practices, as well as upcoming programs to manage challenging patients. If a nurse is assaulted at work, there are clear systems in place for them to file a report, find resources, and get help from the peer support team.”
-
Kerry LaBarbera, 1199SEIU Chapter Co-chair and ER Nurse
“1199 BMC nurses fought hard for our new contract, and we are proud of what we won together, including wage increases, improved safety language, and exciting new work/life balance additions. Join us so we can make BMC a better place for everyone!"
